Avriel Bar-Yosef

Avriel Bar-Yosef was born in 1954

Avriel Bar-Yosef was born on December 26, 1954. He earned a bachelor's degree in naval architecture and mechanical engineering from the University of Glasgow and a master's degree in naval architecture from the University of Michigan. He is married to Aliza, an employee of the Defense Ministry, has 4 children, and lives in Zikhron Ya'akov.

He graduated from the Naval Officers School in Acre and served in the Israeli Navy for about 25 years. His last post, from 1999 to 2003, was head of the equipment directorate.

After leaving the navy he worked at Rafael on the Israeli maritime industry and sat on several boards. From 2004 to 2009 he directed the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee and its defense budget committee. From 2009 to 2015 he was deputy head of the National Security Council, where he sat on the Tzemach Committee on natural gas policy, and in 2012 he briefly chaired Haifa Port.

In February 2016 Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu named him head of the National Security Council, but in July he withdrew. Police questioned him in the submarine affair from November 2016, and in April 2021 he was indicted on bribery charges. In 2022 the Tax Authority required him to pay a fine of 145 thousand shekels over unreported rental income.
