Dani Karavan was born in 1930 in Tel Aviv

Karavan was born in Tel Aviv in 1930. His father Abraham was the city's landscape architect for decades.

He began studying art as a boy, first with Aharon Avni and later with Yechezkel Streichman, Avigdor Stematsky and Marcel Janco. In 1949 he studied at Bezalel in Jerusalem. In 1956 and 1957 he studied fresco in Florence and later drawing in Paris.

He was among the founders of Kibbutz Harel in 1948 and lived there until 1955. There he met Hava Fogler, whom he married in 1955, and they had three daughters.

Karavan designed stage sets for groups such as Batsheva and Martha Graham and made wall reliefs, including the south wall of the Knesset plenum hall. He represented Israel at the 1976 Venice Biennale and went on to make environmental works abroad, such as Passages in Portbou and the Axe Majeur near Paris. He also pushed for preserving Tel Aviv's White City, which UNESCO listed in 2003.

He was active in Meretz and appeared on its Knesset lists several times. He died on May 29, 2021, and was buried at Kibbutz Shoval.
