Grabovskyy was born in 1985 in Simferopol, in Crimea, then part of the Soviet Union. He trained there in road cycling.
As a young rider he won European titles in track cycling and time trials. At the 2005 World Championships in Madrid he won the under-23 road race with a solo breakaway and finished second in the time trial.
He signed his first professional contract with the Belgian team Quick-Step. He later rode for the Italian-Ukrainian team ISD and took part in the 2009 Giro d'Italia, finishing 67th. In 2010 he said he had struggled with alcoholism during his time with Quick-Step.
