Dorit Aharonov was born in 1970 in Washington, D.C.

Aharonov was born in 1970 in Washington, D.C. and grew up in Haifa. Her father is the mathematician Dov Aharonov, and her uncle is the physicist Yakir Aharonov.

She earned a master's degree in physics at the Weizmann Institute of Science. In 1999 she received her doctorate from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem for a thesis on noisy quantum computation, which found ways to make quantum computers resistant to noise.

She was a visiting scholar at the Institute for Advanced Study in 1998-99. She then did postdoctoral work at Princeton University and at the University of California, Berkeley. Afterward she became a professor of computer science and engineering at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

Her research covers quantum algorithms, quantum error correction and quantum complexity. The Aharonov-Jones-Landau algorithm is named after her. In 2005 the journal Nature chose her as one of 4 young theorists in their field, and she has received the Krill Prize and the Michael Bruno Memorial Award.
