Doron Erel was born in Givatayim on April 13, 1959. When he was drafted into the IDF, he volunteered for Sayeret Matkal. He did paratrooper basic training and then completed the unit's combat training course.

After his discharge he studied geology at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. During his studies he traveled in the Nepal Himalaya and in Alaska. When he finished, he set out on a 5-year journey of travel and climbing around the world.

In those years he organized the first climbing expeditions to leave Israel and built ties with climbers abroad. In 1992 he reached the summit of Everest with an expedition and became the first Israeli to do so. The climb was recorded in a TV film and in his book One Hour on the Roof of the World.

He then set out to climb the Seven Summits. He completed them in June 2000 on Mount Kosciuszko in Australia, the first Israeli to do so. In 2011 he opened a tourism business in western Canada, next to Tweedsmuir Provincial Park.
