Gershon Salomon was born in 1935 in Jerusalem
Salomon was born in Jerusalem in 1935 to Avraham and Yehudit Salomon, a sixth generation of the Salomon family in the Land of Israel. He studied at Tachkemoni school and the Hebrew Gymnasium Rehavia, and was a member of Betar. In 1947 he joined the Irgun youth company, and was arrested by British police while posting Irgun leaflets.
He served in the IDF Combat Engineering Corps as a platoon and then company commander, and fought in the 1956 Sinai Campaign. In January 1958 he was badly hurt near the Syrian border while leading a mine clearing force. He returned to his unit as an operations officer and was discharged in 1960.
He earned a bachelor's degree in Islamic history and political science at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He began a doctorate on the Kurdish national movement but left it unfinished.
Salomon joined Herut and sat on its leadership. He was elected to the Jerusalem city council in 1970 on the Gahal list. He left Herut and the Likud after the Camp David Accords, helped found the Tehiya movement in 1979, and ran for mayor of Jerusalem in 1983.
After the Six Day War he founded the Temple Mount Faithful, which seeks to build the Third Temple. After the 1990 Temple Mount riots the police barred him from the site, and he was allowed back in January 2019. He died on November 23, 2022.
