Haim Ginott was born in 1922 in Tel Aviv
Haim Ginott, born Ginzburg, was born in Tel Aviv in 1922, during the British Mandate. He had three brothers. He began his career in 1947 as an elementary school teacher in Israel.
After moving to the United States, he graduated from Teachers College at Columbia University in 1948 and earned a master's degree in 1949. He went on to study psychology at Columbia and received a doctorate in clinical psychology in 1952.
From 1952 to 1960 he was chief clinical psychologist at the Child Guidance Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida. He later taught at New York University and Adelphi University, served as resident psychologist on NBC's Today Show, and wrote a weekly newspaper column called Between Us. He also advised the Israeli ministry of education for UNESCO.
His approach asked parents and teachers to understand a child's feelings and to speak with respect, judging the behavior and not the child. Adele Faber and Elaine Mazlish, who attended his parenting group, said his classes inspired their books.
He lived in New York with his wife, psychologist Alice Lasker, who co-wrote Between Husband and Wife with him. They had two daughters. He died in New York in 1973 and was buried at Kibbutz Sha'ar HaGolan in the Jordan Valley.
