Henry Markram was born on 28 March 1962 in South Africa. He later became an Israeli citizen.
He earned a bachelor's degree in science at the University of Cape Town. In 1991 he completed a PhD in neurobiology at the Weizmann Institute of Science under Menahem Segal. His doctoral work linked acetylcholine to memory mechanisms.
He went on to the National Institutes of Health in the United States as a Fulbright Scholar, then to Bert Sakmann's lab at the Max Planck Institute in Heidelberg. His work there helped describe spike timing-dependent synaptic plasticity. As an assistant professor at the Weizmann Institute, his group studied the neocortical column.
In 2002 he moved to EPFL as a full professor and founded the Brain Mind Institute. In 2013 the European Union funded the Human Brain Project, which he led, but less than 2 years later the project was judged mismanaged and he was asked to step down. In 2015 the Blue Brain Project published a digital reconstruction of part of a young rat's cortex.
With his wife, neuroscientist Kamila Markram, he founded Frontiers Media in 2007. He has 5 children.
