Henryk Marcin Broder was born on 20 August 1946 in Katowice, Poland, into a Jewish family. He also calls himself Henryk Modest Broder.
Broder works in Germany as a journalist, essayist and television personality, and has also worked in film as a screenwriter, director and producer. His main subjects are Germany's dealing with its past, Islam, Israel and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
After Operation Entebbe he became more critical of the German approach to Israel. He holds that anti-Zionism is in essence antisemitic, and his 1986 book "The Eternal Antisemite" caused a public dispute. In 2008 he spoke at a public hearing of the Bundestag's interior committee on fighting antisemitism.
In 2006 a German court sentenced him to prison after he publicly accused anti-Zionists, among them Hajo Meyer, of Judeophobia. On appeal, a court mostly cleared him.
