Henryk Ross was born in 1910 in Warsaw

Henryk Ross was born in Warsaw in 1910. Before World War II he worked as a sports photographer for a Warsaw newspaper.

From 1940 he worked as a photographer for the Department of Statistics of the Jewish Council in the Łódź Ghetto. His duties included identity photos. He built a stage that let him shoot up to 12 people on one negative, which saved film for secret work.

His secret photos showed daily life, community celebrations, children searching for food, public hangings and deportations. In the fall of 1944, as the ghetto was liquidated, he buried his photos and negatives in a box. He stayed in the ghetto with a group of Jews left to clean it and survived until the Red Army arrived in January 1945.

After liberation he dug up the box. Water damaged much of the material, but about half of his 6,000 images survived.

In 1950 Ross emigrated to Israel, and in 1961 he testified at the trial of Adolf Eichmann. He died in 1991.
