Imad Fares was born on July 28, 1961, and grew up in the Druze village of Hurfeish. He finished high school in Nahariya. His brother is Salah Fares.

He holds a bachelor's degree in Middle East studies and a master's degree in political science from the University of Haifa. He is also a graduate of the IDF Command and Staff College and the National Security College.

Fares volunteered for the Druze reconnaissance unit and led a team in the First Lebanon War, where he was wounded. He later commanded the Rotem Battalion, the Katif Brigade and, from 2001 to 2003, the Givati Brigade in Gaza during the Second Intifada. As a brigadier general he commanded the Edom Division from 2005 to 2007 and the Galilee Division from 2007 to 2009.

In August 2009 he announced his retirement after giving an unreliable report about a car accident involving his military car. He was convicted in a disciplinary hearing of not following orders and unbecoming conduct, and Chief of Staff Gabi Ashkenazi decided to end his service. A Tel Aviv court rejected his petition in 2011, but he later returned to reserve duty.

From 2017 to January 2022 he served as a director of the Amidar company. He is married and has 4 children.
