Kariel Gardosh was born in 1921 in Budapest
He was born Karl Goldberger in Budapest in 1921 to an assimilated Jewish family. During World War II he was sent to forced labor, and in 1944 he worked in a copper mine in Bor. His parents and most of his family were killed in the Holocaust.
He studied French and comparative literature at the University of Szeged and married Shoshana Roman. In early 1946 the couple left Hungary for Paris, where he studied at the Sorbonne. There they joined Lehi, and he sent cartoons to its paper under the pen name Shir.
In March 1948 he immigrated to Israel and changed his first name to Kariel. After Lehi members killed Count Bernadotte, he was jailed with other members of the group. He was released after the 1949 amnesty.
He was graphic editor of the weekly HaOlam HaZeh and was wounded there by a bomb in 1953. That year he joined Maariv, where he drew a daily political cartoon for many years. In 1956 he first drew the character later called Srulik, and from 1981 to 1983 he served as cultural attaché in London.
He had a son and a daughter with Shoshana, and in 1964 he married actress Tova Pardo. He died in 2000. A street in Tel Aviv was named after him in 2003.
