Moshe Oren was born on December 28, 1947, on Kibbutz Mizra in the Jezreel Valley.

His first book, Lights Out, came out in 1981 and was later made into a musical. At the Defense Ministry publishing house he created several book series, and he edited the first Hebrew survival guide for hikers. He walked the whole country from Dan to Eilat and described the journey in a 1994 book.
