The story of Nir Maor's life
Maor was born in Kibbutz Ashdot Ya'akov, one of 3 children of Bracha and Ami Maor. His father was an officer in Shayetet 13. His brother Tzur, an armored corps officer, was killed in the First Lebanon War.
He served in the Navy and completed the naval officers course with distinction. He commanded missile boats and a submarine, took part in developing the Dolphin class submarines, and led the submarine flotilla from 1990 to 1992. He later commanded the Ashdod base and headed the personnel division.
After the Second Lebanon War, he headed the Navy inquiry into the strike on INS Hanit. The inquiry found that intelligence warnings about the missile reaching Hezbollah had not led to preparations.
After leaving the IDF, he directed the Clandestine Immigration and Navy Museum until 2020 and continued research on clandestine immigration. In 2023 he received a PhD on the British fleet and the immigrant ships. He is married with 3 children and lives in Zichron Ya'akov.
