He joined the IDF in November 1981 and served in Sayeret Matkal, fighting in the First Lebanon War. He returned to the unit in 1987 and received an officer's commission after a special operation. He later commanded the 202nd Paratroopers Battalion in southern Lebanon.
As a colonel he commanded the Etzion and Judea brigades and then the Nahal Brigade. He led the Judea and Samaria Division from 2007 to 2009 and the Command and Staff College. In 2012 he became a major general and commander of the 479th Corps, and during the Gaza war he oversaw investigations of incidents harming civilians.
He retired in 2015 and held business and municipal roles. On 7 October 2023 he traveled to Nahal Oz and helped rescue his son's family and other residents. He later called for a state commission of inquiry, led protests for equal military service and joined politics.
