Ofer Comay

Ofer Comay was born in 1957 in Yad Hanna

Comay was born in 1957 at Kibbutz Yad Hanna. His father, Dr. Eliyahu Comay, is a physicist, and he has two brothers. In 1974 he won the Israeli youth chess championship, and in 1975 he took first place in the national mathematics olympiad of the Weizmann Institute of Science.

He graduated from Ironi Yud Alliance high school in Tel Aviv. He later earned a master's degree in mathematics at Tel Aviv University, with a thesis supervised by Prof. Moshe Jarden. From 1975 to 1978 he served in the IDF Armored Corps.

With his father he founded a software company, Charactell, that develops automatic reading and understanding of documents, and he manages it. He won the individual World Chess Solving Championship in 1980, 1985 and 1999 and holds the title of International Solving Grandmaster. As captain of the Israeli team he won the world team championship in 1985, 1996, 1998, 2001 and 2004.

He is also an International Master of chess composition. He won the open world championship in Kobe, Japan, in 2012, and a FIDE international simultaneous solving contest in 2023. In 2014 he published the book Science or Fiction?, which questions Quantum Chromodynamics based on his father's work. He is married to Oli Comay, they have 3 children, and he lives in Tel Aviv.
