Oren Peli was born in 1970 in Ramat Gan
Oren Peli was born in Ramat Gan to a Jewish family. At 19 he moved to the United States.
He started out as a software programmer. He helped develop Photon Paint, a graphics program for the Amiga, and wrote networking code for home console versions of Mortal Kombat 3 while at Sculptured Software. He never studied film.
His first film, Paranormal Activity, came out in 2007. The idea came from noises he heard at night after moving alone into his first house. The film was made privately on a budget of 15,000 dollars and earned more than 190 million dollars.
He then worked with James Wan and Leigh Whannell on Insidious and produced films in both franchises. In 2012 he wrote and produced Chernobyl Diaries and co-created the ABC series The River with Michael R. Perry. In 2015 he directed Area 51.
