The story of Raz Segal's life

Raz Segal is an Israeli and American historian who lives in the United States. At Stockton University he is Associate Professor of Holocaust and Genocide Studies and Endowed Professor in the Study of Modern Genocide. He also directs the university's Master of Arts program in Holocaust and Genocide Studies.

Segal has written several books on the Holocaust in Carpathian Ruthenia. His research draws on sources in Hebrew, English, German, Yiddish and Hungarian.

During the Gaza war, Segal described Israel's full blockade of the Gaza Strip as a case of genocide and linked it to the Nakba of 1948. He argued that the IDF was carrying out acts of killing, causing severe bodily harm and imposing measures meant to destroy Palestinian existence.

After these statements, the University of Minnesota withdrew a job offer for him to lead its Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies, following a campaign by a pro-Israel group. Faculty there passed a non-confidence motion against the interim president and the provost. In 2026 the university paid him a $250,000 settlement, and Stockton removed a statement of his on Gaza from its program webpage after a donor complained.
