Rose Liechtenstein was born in 1887 in Gorzów Wielkopolski
Rose Liechtenstein was born in 1887 in Landsberg an der Warthe, then in the German Empire and today Gorzów Wielkopolski in Poland. Her father was a rabbi and cantor. Her parents opposed her wish to act, so she left home to study acting in Berlin.
She began her stage career in 1909 at the royal theater in Meiningen. She later performed in Düsseldorf, Mannheim, Berlin and New York, and during World War I she played for German soldiers in France and Belgium. From 1916 she acted in silent films, including Fritz Lang's Metropolis and his sound film M.
After the Nazis came to power, as a Jewish artist she could act only in the Jewish Kulturbund. Her husband, the architect Richard Burkhardt, separated from her after 20 years of marriage. She gave her last performance in Germany in February 1936 and moved to the Land of Israel that summer.
She acted with the satirical theater HaMatateh until 1945. In 1944 she joined Yosef Milo and 3 others in a sketch program, and the 5 then founded the Cameri Theater. There she played 25 roles, in plays such as The Miser, Pygmalion and Antigone.
In October 1955 she had a heart attack during a performance, finished the show and was then hospitalized. She died in Tel Aviv in December 1955 and was buried in Kiryat Shaul Cemetery.
