Shabtai Teveth was born in 1925 in Petah Tikva

Teveth was born in 1925 in the quarry workers' village of Migdal Tzedek near Petah Tikva. His parents, Shifra and Dov Tevchnik, were pioneers of the Third Aliyah. The family moved several times and settled in Tel Aviv.

From 1944 to 1946 he studied Hebrew, philosophy and English literature at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He earned a master's degree at Temple University in Philadelphia between 1946 and 1948, while writing for local newspapers.

During the War of Independence his ship was held in Beirut and he was detained for some months. After his release he joined a Palmach battalion. He later became deputy editor of the army weekly Bamahane.

Teveth worked at Haaretz from 1950 to 1983 and became its political correspondent. His 1982 research on the murder of Haim Arlosoroff led Menachem Begin to order a judicial commission, which concluded he was wrong. In 1981 he became a research fellow at the Moshe Dayan Center at Tel Aviv University.

He wrote a multi-volume biography of Ben-Gurion. He suffered a stroke in 2002 and stopped writing. He received the Israel Prize in 2005 and died in 2014.
