Shlomo Baum was born in Kfar Yehezkel in 1928 to David and Tzipora Baum, who were among the village's founders. As a boy he took part in guard duties with his father.
He fought with the Haganah in the War of Independence and later joined the Golani Brigade. In 1953 he helped Ariel Sharon create Unit 101 and served as its deputy commander. He later commanded a company in the paratroopers and fought in the Sinai campaign.
After a heart attack in 1963 he left the army, but he returned after the Six-Day War. He planned Operation Raviv and helped set up the Rimon unit in the Gaza Strip. He retired as a lieutenant colonel in 1975.
He was active in the Rafi party in the 1960s and later moved to the political right. He opposed the peace agreement with Egypt and the Oslo Accords, and in 1994 he co-founded a right-wing association. He lived in Abu Tor in Jerusalem, married the journalist Ilana and had children.
