Shlomo Havlin was born in 1942 in Jerusalem
Shlomo Havlin was born in Jerusalem on July 21, 1942, to Yona and David Havlin. He is named after his grandfather, Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Havlin, founder of the Torat Emet yeshiva. The Talmud scholar Shlomo Zalman Havlin is his cousin.
He earned a master's degree in physics at Tel Aviv University and a doctorate in physics at Bar-Ilan University, both with distinction. His doctoral work dealt with statistical physics.
He joined the physics department at Bar-Ilan University and became a full professor in 1984. He chaired the department from 1984 to 1988, led the Israel Physical Society from 1996 to 1999, and was dean of the Faculty of Exact Sciences from 1999 to 2001. He held visiting posts at the University of Edinburgh, NIH, Boston University and the Tokyo Institute of Technology.
His research covers diffusion and reactions in fractals and disordered systems, patterns in DNA, earthquakes and complex networks. He founded 4 research centers at Bar-Ilan and published more than 700 papers and 11 books.
