Shmulik Marco

Shmulik Marco was born in 1955 in Israel
Shmulik Marco was born in Israel on June 12, 1955. He grew up in Petah Tikva, where he attended the Shiffer school and Brenner High School. He served in the IDF in the Golani reconnaissance unit.
From 1976 to 1988 he worked as a guide and then as director of the Eilat field school of the Society for the Protection of Nature in Israel. He earned his bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees in geology at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, completing the doctorate in 1997. In 1991 he did advanced study in geophysics at Stanford University.
He was a researcher at the Geological Survey from 1994 to 2000. In 2000 he joined the geophysics department at Tel Aviv University as a lecturer and became a full professor in 2013. He headed the department from 2013 to 2016 and was the first head of the Porter School of the Environment and Earth Sciences from 2016 to 2021.
His research dates past earthquakes through deformed sediments and damage to archaeological structures, and he also studies the past behavior of the Earth's magnetic field. His group has matched the ages of earthquake layers in Dead Sea sediments with ancient written accounts of earthquakes.
