Sulamith Goldhaber was born in 1923 in Vienna
Sulamith Low was born in Vienna, Austria, on November 4, 1923. Her family emigrated from Austria, and she grew up in Mandatory Palestine.
She studied at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, where she met Gerson Goldhaber. She earned an M.Sc. in 1947 and married him that year. The couple moved to the United States and received doctorates from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1951.
At Columbia University she worked as an assistant to Jack Steinberger at the Nevis Laboratory. In 1953 the family moved to Berkeley, where she shifted from physical chemistry to high-energy physics. Working with her husband at the Bevatron, she was the first to observe nuclear interactions of the antiproton.
In the 1960s the couple formed the Goldhaber-Trilling Group with George Trilling and turned to the bubble chamber. They were the first to measure the spin of the K* meson. She often spoke at scientific conferences.
In 1965 the couple traveled to lecture at laboratories abroad. In Madras, India, she suffered a stroke, and surgery found a brain tumor. She died on December 11, 1965, and Tel Aviv University holds a colloquium in her memory.
