Zalman Nechemia Goldberg was born in 1931 in Minsk

Goldberg was born in Minsk in 1931 to Rabbi Avraham Goldberg and Freidel Zaichik. Soon after his birth, his father was arrested by the authorities for running a yeshiva and was later released and expelled to Riga. When he was 5, the family moved to the Land of Israel and settled in Jerusalem.

He studied at Talmud Torah Meah Shearim, Etz Chaim and Tiferet Zvi, then at the Hebron Yeshiva. On the advice of the Chazon Ish he moved to the Ponevezh Yeshiva in Bnei Brak, and later returned to Hebron. He married Rachel, daughter of Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Auerbach, and studied under his father-in-law.

In 1965 he qualified as a rabbinical judge and was appointed head of the Shevet Umechokek kollel for judges. He later sat on a special court for agunot and then on the Rabbinical High Court in Jerusalem. He shaped the exam system for rabbis and judges and co-authored a prenuptial agreement with Mordechai Willig.

He headed the Sadigura yeshiva in Jerusalem and the study hall of the Jerusalem College of Technology, and led the Eretz Hemdah Gazit network of courts. He gave regular lessons at many yeshivas. In 2008 he became editor-in-chief of Encyclopedia Talmudit.

In 2009 he endorsed The King's Torah by Yitzhak Shapira and later withdrew the endorsement. He died in 2020 at Hadassah Medical Center in Ein Kerem after collapsing at home, and was buried on the Mount of Olives.
