Ze'ev Herzog was born in 1941

Ze'ev Herzog was born in 1941. He is married to the sociologist Hanna Herzog, and they have 3 children, among them the economist Chen Herzog.

He studied under Yohanan Aharoni and earned a doctorate in archaeology from Tel Aviv University in 1977. He has taught there since, in the field of archaeology and ancient Near Eastern cultures.

Herzog dug with Yigael Yadin at Hazor and Megiddo and with Aharoni at Arad and Beersheba. He later directed excavations at Tel Michal, Tel Gerisa and ancient Jaffa. He headed the Sonia and Marco Nadler Institute of Archaeology from 2005 to 2010 and advised the national parks authority on the parks at Arad and Beersheba.

With Israel Finkelstein he developed a revised Iron Age chronology that moved finds linked to the united monarchy to a later century. In 1999 his article in Haaretz argued that archaeology does not support the biblical account of early Israel and drew wide debate.
