IDF says Khan Younis strike killed Hamas member described as a journalist
Israel's military says a man named in Palestinian media as a journalist after his death was a Hamas fighter who entered Israel on October 7, 2023.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF), Israel's military, says it killed a member of Hamas's military wing in an airstrike in the southern Gaza Strip on Wednesday, and that the man was later described as a journalist. In a statement from the IDF spokesperson, the military named him as Muhammad Abd al-Aziz Muhammad Nagar and said he had crossed into Israeli territory during the Hamas-led attack of October 7.
The Times of Israel reported that the strike took place in Khan Younis on September 30, 2026, and that Palestinian media identified the man as a journalist after he was killed. The Hebrew news site Ynet also carried the IDF's account in a breaking news alert, placing the word journalist in quotation marks.

What the military says
According to the IDF, the man belonged to the armed wing of Hamas, the Islamist movement that has governed Gaza, and took part in the infiltration of Israel on October 7, 2023. In a post on X, the military said that the reports describing him as a journalist left out his membership in that wing.
The IDF further said that in recent times he had been advancing attacks against Israeli civilians and soldiers and working to rebuild Hamas's capabilities, which it described as being "in systematic violation of the ceasefire." Emanuel Fabian, the Times of Israel military correspondent, relayed the same claims and attributed them to the military.
The IDF released a graphic of the man on October 1, 2026, according to The Times of Israel.
Different spellings of the name
The reports transliterate the name from Arabic in different ways. The IDF uses Muhammad Nagar, with the fuller form Muhammad Abd al-Aziz Muhammad Nagar. The Times of Israel uses Mohammad al-Najar, and a caption on its report spells the first name Mhammad. These appear to refer to the same person, as all the reports describe a single strike and the same set of allegations, but the variation may matter to readers searching other coverage.
Where Khan Younis is
Khan Younis is a city in the southern part of the Gaza Strip, the coastal territory bordering Israel and Egypt. It has been a repeated focus of Israeli military operations during the war that followed the October 7 attack, in which Hamas-led gunmen crossed the border fence into southern Israeli communities and army positions.
The ceasefire and continuing strikes
The IDF framed the strike as a response to activity it says breached the ceasefire in Gaza. The reports do not set out the terms of that agreement or when it took effect. The Times of Israel liveblog that carried the report also noted a separate IDF statement that a Hamas commander was killed in an airstrike in Gaza City on the same day, indicating that Israeli strikes in the territory are continuing while a truce is formally in place.
Disputes over journalists in Gaza
The question of whether people killed in Gaza were working journalists or members of armed groups has come up repeatedly during the war. Israel's military has on a number of occasions said that individuals described in Palestinian or international coverage as media workers were in fact members of Hamas or other factions. In this case, the military's statements are explicit that it considers the journalist label to be a cover that omitted his role in Hamas, while Palestinian media, as reported by The Times of Israel, presented him as a journalist.
What the reports do not say
None of the reports names the Palestinian outlets that identified the man as a journalist, or says which organisation, if any, he worked for. The material includes no response from Hamas, from Palestinian journalist bodies or from the man's family.
The IDF has not published, in the statements cited here, the evidence behind its assertion that he took part in the October 7 infiltration or that he was planning attacks. The reports do not describe the strike itself in detail, including what was targeted, whether anyone else was killed or injured, or what weapon was used. They also do not say how the ceasefire's terms apply to the activity the military alleges.
The claims about the man's role in Hamas rest on the IDF's account. The Times of Israel and Ynet reported those claims and attributed them to the military.
