IDF says strike killed Nukhba operative who attacked Erez Crossing on October 7

The Israel Defense Forces said a strike carried out on Tuesday in the northern Gaza Strip killed Sharif Shadi Ibrahim Labad, whom the military identified as an operative in the Nukhba Force, the commando element of Hamas's military wing. In a statement issued by the IDF spokesperson, the military said Labad had infiltrated the Erez Crossing during the October 7th Massacre, the term used in Israel for the Hamas-led assault on southern Israel.

The military said in a parallel post on X that Labad had advanced attacks against Israeli civilians and soldiers and had worked to rebuild Hamas's military capabilities in what it described as systematic violation of the ceasefire. The statement said he was killed in order to remove the threat he posed, and that steps were taken before the strike to reduce the likelihood of harm to civilians. The IDF also said a separate strike earlier in the week, on Monday, killed another Nukhba commander in northern Gaza.

Who the second man was, and how his name is rendered

The IDF and reporting on the announcement differ slightly on the transliteration of the second name. The IDF spokesperson's statement gave it as Yusuf Saad Al-Din Rashad Zaim, while Emanuel Fabian, the military correspondent for The Times of Israel, rendered it as Yusuf Saad a-Din Rashad Zain. Variation of this kind is routine when Arabic names are written in Hebrew and then into English, and neither version indicates a dispute about who was targeted. Both describe him as a commander in the Nukhba force killed in a strike in the northern Gaza Strip on Monday.

What the Nukhba Force is

Nukhba, an Arabic word meaning elite, is the name of Hamas's specialised infantry and raiding units within the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, the group's armed wing. Nukhba units led the ground assault of October 7, 2023, breaching the perimeter fence at multiple points and attacking army posts, border crossings and communities in the Gaza border area. Since then the IDF has repeatedly announced the deaths of individuals it identifies as Nukhba members, and those announcements have often, as here, tied a named man to a specific location breached during the attack.

Where the Erez Crossing is

Erez sits at the northern end of the Gaza Strip and was for years the main pedestrian crossing point between Gaza and Israel, used by permit-holding workers, medical patients and international staff rather than for cargo. It was one of the points attacked on October 7, 2023, and it has featured in subsequent Israeli military statements about that day. Naming Erez in an announcement of this kind is the mechanism by which the IDF connects a strike years later to the events of the assault.

A disputed detail about the man's civilian role

One of the reports adds a detail the IDF statements do not mention. Joe Truzman of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies wrote that Labad had been a Gaza Civil Defense worker, and that the military identified him as having also been a Hamas operative who took part in the October 7 attack. The Gaza Civil Defense is the enclave's emergency response service, whose personnel carry out rescue work at strike sites and whose casualty reports are widely cited internationally. The IDF's own statements, as published on its Telegram channel and on X, describe Labad only in terms of his role in Hamas's military wing and make no reference to any civil defence employment. The material does not indicate whether the military disputes or confirms that part of the account.

How the announcement is dated

The IDF described the strike that killed Labad as having taken place two days before the announcement, on a Tuesday, and the second strike as having occurred on Monday. Fabian characterised the Labad strike as recent. Israeli military announcements of this type frequently come days after the strike itself, typically once identification is complete, and the statements here do not explain the interval.

What the reports do not say

The announcements do not name the specific location in northern Gaza where either strike took place, and they do not describe the munitions used or the nature of the target, such as whether either man was struck in the open, in a vehicle or inside a building. They do not say whether anyone else was killed or wounded, and the IDF's reference to measures taken to reduce civilian harm is not accompanied by any detail of what those measures were.

No independent account of the strikes from Gaza authorities, medical officials or international organisations appears in the material, and there is no Hamas response to the identifications. The reports do not set out what evidence links Labad to the Erez Crossing on October 7, 2023, beyond the military's assertion, nor do they explain what the IDF means in saying he worked to restore Hamas's capabilities. The alleged ceasefire violation is likewise asserted without specifics. Everything about both men's identities and roles in this account rests on the IDF's own statement.
