Iran's Revolutionary Guards call US Task Force Iron Gate 'wordplay'
A Guards spokesman said Washington cannot choke Iran's economy or close its trade routes, citing Tehran's preparations and close contact with neighbouring states.

A spokesman for Iran's Revolutionary Guards has rejected a new American effort to tighten economic pressure on the country, saying Washington will fail to cut off Iran's trade. The Times of Israel reported that Gen. Hossein Mohebbi, speaking to the semi-official Fars news agency on Sunday, described the US military's Task Force Iron Gate as "merely a wordplay".
Mohebbi argued that the United States would not be able to blockade Iran's economy or shut its trade routes, because Tehran had prepared for such a move and stays in close communication with the countries around it. The Jerusalem Post also reported that Iran dismissed the prospect of the US enforcing an economic blockade and closing its trade corridors, presenting the comments as a direct response to the American task force.
What Task Force Iron Gate is meant to do
According to The Times of Israel, the US military set up the task force to help stop Iran from moving advanced weapons and other sanctioned goods across its land frontiers and over the Caspian Sea. Its remit extends beyond arms. The unit is also to target the transfer of dual-use technologies, meaning equipment and know-how with both civilian and military applications, and to cut what Washington describes as illegal sources of income for Iran.
The task force is to be headquartered in Tampa, Florida, and will work alongside other agencies of the US government, the same report said. The reports do not say which agencies are involved or how the work will be divided between them.
Who is speaking for Iran
The Revolutionary Guards, formally the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and often shortened to IRGC, is a powerful military and security force in Iran that operates separately from the country's regular army. Its spokesmen regularly comment on confrontations with the United States and its allies, and their statements are generally read as reflecting the views of Iran's security establishment.

Mohebbi delivered his remarks through Fars, an outlet described in the reporting as semi-official. Iranian media of this kind are not formally state organs but are widely regarded as close to parts of the state, and officials often use them to put positions on the record.
Why the land and sea routes matter
The task force's stated focus on Iran's land borders and the Caspian Sea points to routes other than the Gulf shipping lanes that usually dominate discussion of pressure on Iran. The Caspian is an inland sea on Iran's northern edge, shared with several other states, which gives Tehran a route for trade that does not pass through waters patrolled by Western navies. Mohebbi's reference to close coordination with neighbours appears aimed at exactly these channels: his argument is that a country with many neighbouring partners cannot easily be sealed off.

Iran's Revolutionary Guards call US Task Force Iron Gate mere 'wordplay'
His central claim, as quoted, is that the American approach cannot produce the severe economic strain and collapse that he said was Washington's goal. He did not, in the comments reported, describe the specific preparations Iran had made.
How the two reports compare
Both outlets carry the same core account: Mohebbi was reacting to the American task force and rejected the idea that the US could enforce a blockade or close Iran's trade routes. The Times of Israel version contains the fuller detail on the task force's mission and location and the direct quotation. The available text of the Jerusalem Post report is brief, and nothing in it contradicts the Times of Israel account.
What the reports do not say
The reports do not say what preparations Iran has made, which neighbouring countries Mohebbi had in mind, or whether any of them have commented. No response from the US military or other American officials to Mohebbi's remarks has been reported. The reports also give no timetable for when Task Force Iron Gate will begin operations or how large it will be.
