Israel says it killed Hamas Khan Younis Brigade commander Muhammad al-Yazouri

The Israel Defense Forces and the Israel Security Agency, the domestic intelligence service commonly known as the Shin Bet, said they killed Muhammad Yazouri, the commander of the Khan Younis Brigade of Hamas's military wing, in a strike overnight in southern Gaza. In a joint announcement, the two bodies described the operation as a precise strike in the Khan Younis area carried out on Thursday night.

The same strike killed two other men, the military said: Hudhaifa Muammar, described as a company commander, and a further operative in the same brigade. Emanuel Fabian, the Times of Israel's military correspondent, reported the military and Shin Bet statement naming the second operative as Muhammad Bahjat Radi, while the IDF's English-language post on X rendered the name as Muhammad Bahjat Rashi. The military said Yazouri had been involved in advancing dozens of attacks on Israeli troops and in restoring Hamas capabilities.

Who Yazouri was, according to the Israeli military

The IDF said Yazouri reached the brigade command after a series of earlier posts within the same formation, including deputy commander of the Khan Younis Brigade, commander of its combat support battalion, and head of its intelligence department. In recent months, the military said, he was responsible for directing the activity of operatives in the brigade.

Hamas-affiliated channels identified him by the name Muhammad Abdul Salam al-Yazouri and the nom de guerre Abu al-Haitham. Joe Truzman, a researcher at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, wrote that Asharq Al-Awsat, citing Hamas sources, reported that al-Yazouri had previously led the group's intelligence apparatus, had helped prepare the October 7 attack and later took part in handovers of Israeli hostages. Those claims come from Hamas sources quoted by the newspaper and were not part of the Israeli military's own account.

What a brigade means in Hamas's structure

Hamas's armed wing, the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, is organised territorially across the Gaza Strip, with regional brigades subdivided into battalions and companies. The Khan Younis Brigade covers the southern city of Khan Younis and its surroundings, one of the largest population centres in the enclave and an area that has seen repeated Israeli ground operations. The Telegram channel Abu Ali Express, which monitors Arabic-language media, described the position as comparable in weight to that of a regional command general in a conventional army.

Israel has said throughout the war that it targets the commanders of these formations in an effort to degrade the chain of command, and announcements of this kind have followed a consistent pattern: a joint IDF and Shin Bet statement naming the commander, listing his prior roles, and naming others killed in the same strike.

Where the accounts diverge

The reports do not fully agree on where the strike took place or how it was carried out. The IDF placed it in the area of Khan Younis. Ynet reported that the strike, which it described as a joint IDF and Shin Bet air operation, took place in al-Mawasi, the coastal strip west of Khan Younis that has been designated at various points as a humanitarian area. Abu Ali Express said the strike hit a group of people near the al-Qubba mosque in Khan Younis. Truzman described a drone strike; other accounts refer simply to an airstrike.

There is also variation in the transliteration of names, common when Arabic names pass through Hebrew and English reporting. The second man killed appears as Hudhaifa Muammar in the Israeli military's statement and as Hudhaifa Abu Muammar in the account attributed to Hamas sources, where he is described as an engineer who developed military capabilities.

Timing of the announcements

Fabian reported that Hamas and Palestinian media had announced the commander's death before the Israeli military confirmed the identity, noting that a "martyr poster" for al-Yazouri had been published by an account Hamas uses to announce the deaths of its members. At that stage the military had confirmed only that it struck and killed operatives in the Khan Younis area overnight. The Jerusalem Post also reported the killing of the Khan Younis Brigade commander in an Israeli air strike, publishing a photograph credited to Arab media.

What the reports do not say

None of the material gives a casualty figure beyond the men named, and none says whether anyone else was present at the site or hurt. There is no independent confirmation of the claims attributed to Hamas sources about al-Yazouri's role in preparing the October 7 attack or in hostage handovers. The reports do not state the exact time of the strike, the munition used, or who is expected to take over the brigade. The Gaza health authorities are not cited in any of the material, and no Palestinian official casualty account is included.
