Pentagon puts the cost of the US war with Iran above $47 billion

The United States has spent more than $47 billion on its war with Iran, according to a Pentagon estimate obtained by the Reuters news agency. N12's foreign desk reported that the figure covers the cost of American military operations in the war against Iran, and that the estimate reached Reuters directly.

The Times of Israel reported that US costs of the war have risen to over $47 billion, also citing the Pentagon estimate. Ynet's news alerts service, crediting Reuters, put the cost at $47 billion.

Who produced the figure

The Pentagon is the headquarters of the US Department of Defense and the shorthand commonly used for the department itself. It is responsible for the American armed forces and their budgets, which makes it the body that tracks what military operations cost.

None of the three Israeli outlets says it obtained the estimate itself. All of them trace it to Reuters, the international news agency, which they say received the Pentagon assessment. The reports do not indicate whether the document was released publicly or provided to Reuters privately, and they do not quote from it.

How the reports describe the number

The outlets agree on the core figure but phrase it slightly differently. The Times of Israel and N12 both describe the cost as exceeding $47 billion. Ynet's alert gives the estimate as $47 billion, without saying it is higher than that. The difference is small, but readers should note that two outlets treat $47 billion as a floor while one presents it as the estimate itself.

The Times of Israel's wording, that costs have risen to this level, suggests the figure is an updated tally that has grown over time. The reports do not give any earlier estimate to compare it with.

Why the figure matters to readers following Israel

Israeli media follow the American side of the confrontation with Iran closely, since Washington is Israel's main ally and Iran is regarded in Israel as its principal adversary. A Pentagon accounting of the war's cost is one measure of the scale of the US commitment. The reports themselves offer no analysis of the number and do not connect it to any decision in Washington or Jerusalem.

What the reports do not say

The material is brief, and several basic questions are left unanswered:

  • What period the estimate covers, and when the costs began to be counted.
  • How the total breaks down, for example between munitions, deployments, fuel or other expenses.
  • Whether the figure includes costs beyond direct military operations, such as aid to partners or replacement of equipment.
  • Whether the Pentagon has confirmed the estimate on the record or commented on the Reuters report.
  • How the figure is expected to be funded, or whether it has been presented to the US Congress.

Until fuller reporting or an official statement is available, the $47 billion figure should be read as a Pentagon estimate as described by Reuters and relayed by Israeli outlets, not as a final or audited cost.

How we checked this

The figure was reported by The Times of Israel, N12 and Ynet, all of which attribute it to a Pentagon estimate obtained by Reuters; we have not seen the estimate or the Reuters report ourselves. Ynet gives the cost as $47 billion while the other two say it exceeds that.
