Two suspects held near Latrun on Route 1 over alleged attack plot

Police and the Shin Bet say a joint counterterrorism team detained two men on Israel's main Jerusalem highway, acting on intelligence about a planned attack on civilians.

Israeli police and the Shin Bet security agency announced on the evening of October 19 that two suspects had been detained on Route 1, close to the Latrun interchange, on suspicion of involvement in planning an attack against Israeli civilians. In a joint statement from the two bodies' spokespeople, circulated in Hebrew on News.co.il's channel, the agencies said officers of the Yamam, the police counterterrorism unit, worked together with Shin Bet operatives and were guided by what the statement described as precise intelligence from the agency.

According to that statement, the forces found the pair on the highway, arrested them, and handed them to the Shin Bet for further interrogation. No members of the security forces were hurt. The Times of Israel reported that the operation was carried out by the so-called Tequila team, and that the authorities did not name the suspects.

Who carried out the arrest

The Shin Bet, also known as the Israel Security Agency, is Israel's domestic security service, responsible for intelligence work against attacks inside the country. The Yamam is the Israel Police's elite counterterrorism unit; the joint statement calls it the national unit for fighting terror. The Tequila team brings together Yamam commandos and Shin Bet personnel. The Times of Israel noted that this force is usually sent out when an attack is believed to be imminent and needs to be stopped.

Ynet reported that the team was scrambled after intelligence came in, and that the unusual security activity in the Jerusalem area caused alarm among people nearby. Ynet quoted a police official as saying an attack had been "thwarted".

Where it happened

Route 1 is the main highway linking Jerusalem to the coastal plain, and it is heavily used by commuters. Latrun sits along that road in central Israel, and its interchange is a well-known junction with bus stops serving travellers in both directions. Reports placed the arrest at or near the interchange itself.

What else has been reported

Several Hebrew-language outlets added details beyond the official statement, and these remain attributed to the outlets that published them:

  • News.co.il reported that, according to the suspicion against them, the two intended to carry out an attack in Jerusalem. The joint statement itself refers more generally to an attack against Israeli civilians.
  • N12's Nir Dvori reported that the two men were not armed when they were caught.
  • News.co.il later reported that special forces, under Shin Bet direction, were still operating to locate weapons and to rule out the involvement of further suspects. The outlet also published footage it said showed the suspects' vehicle.

Early reports differed on the number held

Before the police and Shin Bet commented, initial accounts were inconsistent. The Times of Israel, citing Hebrew media, said at the time that some reports spoke of two suspects and others of three, and that the men were described as wanted for security offences. The official statement that followed gave the number as two, and later reports from all outlets used that figure.

What the reports do not say

Neither the joint statement nor any of the reports identifies the suspects, gives their ages, or says where they come from. No organisation has said what form the alleged attack was to take, what target was planned beyond News.co.il's reference to Jerusalem, or how far the plan had progressed. It is not stated whether any weapons have been recovered, and the reported search for weapons and possible accomplices had no announced result at the time of these reports. Nothing has been published about what the intelligence was or how the suspects were tracked to the highway. There is also no information yet on whether charges will be filed or on how long the suspects may be held for questioning.

How we checked this

The arrest of two suspects near Latrun was reported by Ynet, The Times of Israel, The Jerusalem Post, N12 and News.co.il, and confirmed in a joint police and Shin Bet statement. The claims that the target was Jerusalem, that the men were unarmed, and that a weapons search continued each come from a single outlet.
