Ehud Banai spent years trying to break through before Ir Miklat made his name at 32
Ehud Banai was born in Jerusalem in 1953. After years of trying to break into music, playing guitar in Chava Alberstein's shows and writing Amsterdam for Avner Strauss in 1981, he wrote the lyrics of Mashina's Rakevet Layla in 1985 and broke through with his own Ir Miklat and Egel HaZahav, then appeared with his band HaPlitim in the rock opera Mami.
His debut, Ehud Banai VeHaPlitim (1987), is counted among the most important Israeli rock albums of the 1980s. Karov (1989), HaShlishi (1992) and Od Me'at (1996), with Mahari Na, followed, and Ane Li (2004) made him singer of the year in Reshet Gimel's annual Hebrew chart. He has twice won the Ophir award for best original film music.
In 2012 he began hosting Ze HaMakom, a weekly show on Galei Tzahal. In 2017 he made a Ladino album with Berry Sakharof and another with the English guitarist Michael Chapman, in 2018 he received ACUM's lifetime achievement award, and in 2025 he released Plitei HaDub, his debut album remade as dub with Beno Hendler.
