Orphaned Land began with two teenagers in Bat Yam playing death metal in 1991

Orphaned Land is an Israeli metal band, formed in 1991 by Kobi Farhi and Uri Zelcha under the name Resurrection, and known as a pioneer of oriental metal. Their music joins metal with Middle Eastern and North African traditions, including Mizrahi, North African Jewish and Arabic music.

Their first albums, Sahara (1994) and El Norra Alila (1996), came out on the French label Holy Records. Mabool followed in 2004 on Century Media, and The Never Ending Way of ORwarriOR (2010) was produced by Steven Wilson of Porcupine Tree. In May 2010 they opened for Metallica in Israel.

Metal Hammer named them Global Metal Band of the Year for 2014, and their video for Like Orpheus won Video of the Year at the 2018 Progressive Music Awards in London. In 2021 they marked thirty years with a concert at Tel Aviv's Heichal HaTarbut, with a 45-piece orchestra and the Hellscore choir.
