One sentence of thanks, customarily said on waking, before the day begins.

The text of the prayer

The English under each line is Israel.com's own plain-English meaning, not a printed translation.

I give thanks to You, living and everlasting King, for returning my soul to me with compassion. Great is Your faithfulness.

Questions about this prayer

When is Modeh Ani said?

Customarily as soon as a person wakes up, still in bed. It opens the day's prayers.

Why can Modeh Ani be said before washing the hands?

The usual reason given is that it contains no divine name, so there is nothing to wait for.

Do women say the same words?

The letters are the same. A woman customarily says the first word with the vowels of modah (מוֹדָה) in place of modeh (מוֹדֶה).

Is the wording the same in every siddur?

Four editions were compared for this page, two of the Ashkenaz wording and two of the Edot HaMizrach wording, and they print the same letters, so one text is shown.

How long does Modeh Ani take?

About 1 minute at a steady pace, 12 words.
