Cafein in the Carmel Center, at 125 HaNassi Avenue, is the first cafe of a chain that was born in Haifa. The chain's site says it set out in 2000 with this cafe, then opened a roastery and spent two years on a blend in the Italian tradition fitted to the Israeli palate: a dark, relatively long roast that brings out the sugars and makes a sweetish cup. Today the site lists 20 branches around the country, five of them in Haifa, and sells the blends for home. Beside the coffee the cafes serve fresh food meant for a healthy and active way of life, in what the chain calls a warm, homely room with a European touch.
