13 HaNamal Street, Haifa

Chef Alaa Musa's restaurant of fish, seafood and modern Arab cooking, around a long bar and an open kitchen on HaNamal Street by Haifa's port

Lux is chef Alaa Musa's restaurant on HaNamal Street in Haifa's lower city, by the port, which he opened with his partner Ahmad Assadi in March 2018: Walla reported on 5 March 2018 that it would open the next day. By the restaurant's own account, Musa, who grew up in Acre, started at 15 at Uri Buri there, where he met Assadi, studied cooking at Dan Gourmet in Haifa, was made sous-chef at Carmela BaNahala in Tel Aviv at 20, worked for four years in Michelin-starred kitchens in Sweden and opened Al-Marsa in Acre in 2012. He told ynet in 2022 that he won the building in a municipal tender while the street was still neglected, and ynet reported that he had since left Al-Marsa. The restaurant calls its food a rich local kitchen of seasonal ingredients from the sea and the field. Its menu, not divided into starters and mains, runs from oysters, a ceviche on shanklish labneh and a sea-fish tabbouleh with tahini from Nablus to veal from the charcoal grill, and the Balagan from Akka market, fish on freekeh risotto, has been on it since the opening. The room is built around a long bar facing the open kitchen, where diners watch the cooks, with more tables outside on HaNamal Street, and ynet wrote in 2024 of its lively music in the evening; a Haifa food blog wrote in 2022 that the lux kerosene lamps of its design gave it its name. It is open every day from noon to 23:00, with a set lunch from Sunday to Thursday and, in its own words, family meals at Saturday lunchtime. mako placed it 24th among Israel's 30 best restaurants in September 2022, the same month the local paper Kolbo and Radio Haifa named Musa Haifa's chef of the year, and Time Out Israel's 2025 guide to Haifa lists it with Crudo. Musa and Assadi also run Crudo, an Italian-Mediterranean food bar next door, and Musa opened Salt, a fish street-food place on Derech HaAtzmaut. Haifa Center HaShmona station is about 700 metres away, and the Carmelit's Downtown station about 200 metres.

Sources disagree on these hours

Its website gives 12:00 to 23:00 every day from Sunday to Saturday. Its booking page on Ontopo gives the same hours and adds that it stays open until the last guest, and its Google listing, as Wanderlog and Restaurant Guru copy it, gives the same. No source gives a break between lunch and dinner; the set lunch is served from Sunday to Thursday, 12:00 to 17:00. The listings on d.co.il and 2eat still give 17:00 to midnight from Sunday to Thursday and 12:30 to midnight on Friday and Saturday.
