51 Paulus VI Street, Nazareth

A meat and grill restaurant on Paulus VI Street that grew from skewers sold in pita at a Nazareth cinema in 1963

Diana's story, as its Rest page tells it, begins in 1963, when Mahmoud Safadi, known as Abu Duhul, grilled skewers in the kitchen of a Nazareth cinema and sold them in pita with tahini, wrapped in newspaper, to the audience. In 1972 he moved the restaurant into a new building across the road and widened the menu to the home cooking of his parents' house, with Syrian, Lebanese and much Turkish influence, and in the 1970s he was the first to bring seafood to the area, above all to its Arab community. His son Duhul joined the kitchen in 1993, and the page credits him, a familiar face from MasterChef, with the current menu. It names stuffed lamb with rice, fresh shawarma and traditional knafeh among the dishes people come for; the restaurant's own site adds outdoor seating, live music, events and parking.
