A family restaurant of local Arab cooking in a 700-year-old arched building beside Ramla market, in the same family since 1948

Samir's family traces the restaurant to one that Abu Fawzi, Samir's father, ran in Jaffa from 1928; the family moved to Ramla in 1942, opened on the main road and chose to stay in 1948, the year the restaurant counts from. Samir Dabit started working there at 12 and the restaurant was his life for 65 years, until he died in 2015. His son Jalil runs it now, Samir's wife Suad cooks, and the grandchildren, the fourth generation, have started in the kitchen. It sits in a 700-year-old arched building in a lane of the Old City beside the market, decorated with the work of Samir's son, the artist Nihad Dabit. The kitchen makes hummus, masabacha and ful, Suad's stuffed vegetables, meat from the charcoal grill and mattawameh, chicken fried with onion, garlic, lemon and chilli, with beer on tap, boutique wines, malabi and baked knafeh. It hosts acoustic music, wine and beer tastings and private events of up to 40 guests, and across the lane it has opened a shop of wine, beer and cheese.
