Shirat HaYam is a boutique hotel in a basalt building with many arches in the Ottoman style, on the Yigal Allon promenade facing the Golan Heights. By its own account it was built in 1850 and opened as the Hotel Haifa, one of the first hotels in Tiberias, and was enlarged in 1925; after the Egyptian singer Umm Kulthum stayed there in 1946 it was renamed the Star of the East. After 1948 the painter Shimshon Holzman lived in the building and opened a gallery there, and Nahum Gutman painted it in his picture The Promenade in Tiberias. Restored over several years, it now has 11 rooms and suites, most looking out on the lake, and serves generous breakfasts, in the middle of an open-air sculpture museum along the promenade with works by Ilana Goor and Amos Yaskil among others.
