Shaldag works deep behind the lines in close touch with the Air Force. Its fighters begin with basic training to the level the IDF calls Rifleman 04 and then go through the unit's professional course.
The way in is the physical screening of Yom Sayarot: a candidate needs the Shaldag result there to be called to the unit's try-out.
The way into Shaldag runs through 3 steps.
- 1Yom Sayarot, with the Shaldag result.
- 2The unit's try-out.
- 3Medical and security checks, then the draft.
Training at Shaldag lasts about 19 months.
- Basic training to Rifleman 04, then the professional course
The IDF's guides say what to train for before the screening.
The IDF's guide to Yom Sayarot says to start training at least three months before it, with 3 to 5 aerobic sessions and 2 to 3 strength sessions a week, and to keep hard training out of the week before it.
