Alfred Mansfeld was born in 1912 in Saint Petersburg

Mansfeld was born in Saint Petersburg, Russia, in 1912. As a child he moved with his family to Berlin.

He began studying architecture in Berlin in 1931. After the Nazis rose to power he moved to Paris in 1933. He finished his studies there in 1935 as a student of Auguste Perret.

He came to Mandate Palestine in 1935 and settled in Haifa. From 1937 to 1959 he worked in partnership with Munio Gitai Weinraub, and the two won 11 national competitions. The partnership ended after his entry won the competition for the Israel Museum.

In 1959 he opened his own office, later Mansfeld-Kehat Architects, where his son Michael became a partner. He designed the Israel Museum with Dora Gad, along with the Haifa Auditorium and the Stella Maris neighborhood. From 1949 he taught at the Technion for decades and was dean of its architecture faculty from 1954 to 1956.

He was elected to the Berlin Academy in 1971 and to the Paris Academy in 1983. He died in 2004 at his home in Haifa, which he had designed.
