Andy Z. Lehrer was born in 1930 in Iași
Lehrer was born in 1930 in Iași, Romania, to a Jewish family. He studied at the Faculty of Philosophy of the Alexandru Ioan Cuza University in 1951. In 1954 he completed the Faculty of Natural Sciences there as a student of Professor Petru M. Șuster.
In 1967 he earned a doctorate in biological sciences with a thesis on the blow flies of Romania. From 1964 to 1996 he was a senior researcher and head of the entomology laboratory at the Romanian Academy's Institute of Biological Research in Iași. He also worked in international biocartography.
In 1996 he immigrated to Israel to be near his daughter, who was ill and died in 2011. He became a research associate in the Zoology laboratory at Tel Aviv University. From 2006 to 2013 he edited the journal Fragmenta Dipterologica alone, writing nearly all of it.
In 2005 he reclassified the genus Bengalia into a new family, Bengaliidae. The Danish researcher Knut Rognes disputed this in 2006, and major taxonomic sources do not accept many of the new names. Lehrer lived for a time in Ma'alot-Tarshiha and died in 2014.
