Armon (Amram) Laredo was born on March 24, 1930, in Fez, Morocco. He wanted to move to Israel to take part in the War of Independence, although Morocco then barred its Jews from leaving. His first attempt to leave ended with a week in jail.
With help from a retired general, he crossed into Oran in Algeria and reached Marseille with a forged identity card. From there he sailed to Haifa in 1948. He was drafted into the IDF on arrival.
After his discharge he worked at the Dead Sea Works and settled in Dimona, where he represented local workers at the plant. In 1958 Dimona was separated from the Tamar Regional Council, and he was appointed head of its first appointed council. He won the first council election in November 1959 and served until 1966, then turned to business.
In 1974 members of his party, Mapai, asked him to run again, and he was elected head of Dimona, by then a city. He served until 1978 and then left public life for the private sector.
