Aryeh Shalev was born in 1926
Aryeh Shalev was born Aryeh Friedlander in Poland. He moved to the Land of Israel with his parents in 1935. He studied at a primary school in Ra'anana and at the Ahad Ha'am Gymnasium in Petah Tikva.
As a youth he was active in the Haganah and joined the Jewish Settlement Police in 1944. In the War of Independence he commanded a company in the Golani Brigade and later became its intelligence officer. He went on to hold intelligence posts and studied at the war college in Paris.
In September 1963 he became IDF Spokesperson and was promoted to colonel. After the Six-Day War he became assistant to the head of military intelligence for research. Before the Yom Kippur War he assessed that a war with Egypt and Syria was unlikely.
The Agranat Commission found him responsible for his department's error and ruled he could not stay in military intelligence. In April 1974 he was appointed military governor of Judea and Samaria, and he left the IDF in 1976 as a brigadier general.
In 1977 he joined the Jaffee Center for Strategic Studies and later researched at the Institute for National Security Studies. He published studies and books on national security. He died on August 2, 2011, and was married with 2 sons.
