Buky Schwartz was born in 1932 in Jerusalem

Moshe (Buky) Schwartz was born in Jerusalem in 1932. He studied sculpture at the Avni Institute in Tel Aviv and worked as an assistant to Yitzhak Danziger.

In 1959 he moved to London to study at Saint Martin's School of Art, where he studied with Anthony Caro. He later taught there in 1966 and 1967.

Back in Israel, he made painted steel sculptures with geometric forms. In 1965 he helped found the 10+ group, and in 1966 he represented Israel at the Venice Biennale, where he first used mirrors in his work. In 1967 he created the Pillar of Heroism at Yad Vashem.

In 1971 he moved to New York and turned to video art. He made video structures, in which shapes spread across a room formed one whole image on a video screen. His public works stand in Israel and abroad, including a memorial to Jonathan Netanyahu in Philadelphia.

He lived and worked in Tel Aviv and New York until his death in 2009. In 2019 his family donated his archive to the Israel Museum.
