David Amsalem was born in 1971 in Lod

David Amsalem was born on 4 September 1971 and grew up in Lod. He played as a striker in his youth. He began in the children's section of Ayelet Lod and moved on to the youth teams of Hapoel Tel Aviv and Bnei Yehuda.

He made his senior debut with Bnei Yehuda in the 1990/1991 season. After a dispute over his player card, he sat out a year and then played one season for Hapoel Tel Aviv. In 1995/1996 he joined Beitar Jerusalem and won 2 league titles and the Toto Cup there.

In 1998 he moved to Crystal Palace in England, where he played 10 games. His signing drew controversy over claims that the fee never reached Beitar. He returned to Israel with Hapoel Haifa in 1999/2000 and rejoined Beitar in 2000/2001.

With Beitar he won the league in 2006/2007 and 2007/2008 and the State Cup in 2008 and 2009. He played 31 games for the Israel national team. He retired as a player at the end of the 2008/2009 season.

He then became an assistant coach at Beitar and was named head coach during 2009/2010. He later worked as a scout and again as an assistant. He was appointed head coach in July 2011 but resigned days before the league began, and he left the club after the 2013/2014 season.
