David Yosef was born in 1957
David Yosef was born on August 10, 1957, in Jerusalem, where he grew up. He is the ninth child of Margalit and Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, a former Chief Rabbi of Israel and spiritual leader of Shas. His father's family is of Iraqi Jewish descent and his mother's of Syrian Jewish descent.
He studied at the Or Israel yeshiva, then at Ponevezh and later at the Hebron Yeshiva in Jerusalem. At Hebron he met Aryeh Deri, and the two became long-time friends.
In 1990 he became rabbi of the Har Nof neighborhood in Jerusalem. He heads the Yechaveh Da'at study hall, which trains rabbis, and wrote the Halacha Berura series on Jewish law, based mainly on his father's rulings. He joined the Shas Council of Torah Sages after his father's death and opened the Yechaveh Da'at kashrut agency in 2020.
In October 2020 he left his state post after a petition by the Reform movement and Women of the Wall over his statements against them and the Supreme Court and his calls to vote Shas. The court then rejected the petition but said it viewed his remarks seriously.
In 2024 he was elected Sephardi Chief Rabbi with 72 votes and was crowned in Jerusalem in December. He also became president of the Great Rabbinical Court and of the Porat Yosef yeshiva. He is married to Sofia, and they have 9 children.
