Emil Grunzweig was born in 1947 in Cluj-Napoca

Grunzweig was born in Cluj, Romania, to Olga and Shmuel Grunzweig. His mother had survived Auschwitz, and he had a brother, Eliezer. The family lived in France and Brazil, and moved to Israel after his father died in France in 1963.

The family settled in Haifa, where he attended the Hebrew Reali High School. He later served in the army, then studied mathematics and philosophy at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He also completed a master's degree there in the history, philosophy, and sociology of science.

After his discharge he lived at Kibbutz Revivim and worked in its orchards. He taught mathematics at Maaleh haBesor high school at Kibbutz Magen and ran role-playing projects with students on topics such as the Arab-Israeli conflict. At the Van Leer Jerusalem Institute he organized joint summer camps for Jewish and Arab youth.

On February 10, 1983, a grenade was thrown into a Peace Now rally outside the Prime Minister's office in Jerusalem, killing him and injuring 9 others. The rally supported the Kahan Commission's recommendations on the Sabra and Shatila massacre. Yonah Avrushmi was convicted of his murder in 1985, and in 1987 the Adam Institute for Democracy and Peace was founded in his memory.
