Gideon Toury was born in 1942 in Haifa

Toury was born in Haifa in 1942, the first child of the historian Jacob Toury and his wife Eve. He finished high school at the Reali School in Haifa in 1960.

He served in the Nahal and the paratroopers and then spent 6 years at Kibbutz Beit HaEmek. There he edited a journal and organized cultural events. He later did his first translations at a children's journal.

He earned a degree with honors in Hebrew language and literature at Tel Aviv University in 1970. He received a PhD in literary theory there in 1977, on translation norms in Hebrew literary translation from 1930 to 1945.

Toury introduced the concept of translation norms, rules found by observing real translations in their context. He translated about 35 books from English and German, including C.S. Lewis's Narnia series. In 1989 he founded the journal Target, and from 1996 to 2000 he headed the School of Cultural Studies at Tel Aviv University.

He was elected president of the Israeli applied linguistics association in 2010. He died in Herzliya in 2016.
